In this newsletter we thought it would be a change to tell you about other interesting items we have in our shop but are not yet on our website.

1st off, some of you may not know that we also specialise in fine jewellery made with precious stones, that may be a little different from the jewellery you see everyday in the high street chain stores. Like this stunning Cognac diamond 18ct ring which has a superb quality 1.34 carat russian diamond in a warm cognac colour as its centre stone.

Or maybe a fabulous handmade ring designed by us and containing the most vivid kanchon sapphire stone which is 100% natural colour. We have many more beautiful pieces like these in store which we would be delighted to show you.

Did You Know?

We also have a large collection of Fossils, rocks and minerals on display and for sale in our upper floor showroom. Just come and have look at these to while a way a few minutes (or hours!) on your visit to Sheringham this summer. To give you just a flavour of the specimens we have :-

Clocks and Pre-owned Jewellery

As we are a family business with a history full of clock makers, inventors and repairers we have a selection of antique clocks for those people that like the reassuring "tick" of an old mechanical clock to replace the silence in the house. We also have a large range of pre-owned and antique jewellery, like the two late nineteenth century pieces shown above.

Make A Statement Designer Necklaces

We have been busy this week adding this gorgeous range of designer necklaces to our website. The necklaces are designed by British sculptor and artist Roger Hill Stuart. The origional piece of each design is hand carved then handcast to create a wonderful unique design, bold and completely original. We loved them when we first set eyes on them and just had to get them for our site, they also take pride of place in our current shop window. They are made from a combination of Pewter, Graphite and composite bronze.

Since arriving back from the annual spring fair buying trip the exciting new Jewellery we found is now starting to arrive. Many of these have already been added to our website, and many more will be added over the next few weeks including Designer Jewellery from Paula Bolton, this years new range from Cavendish French, lots of natural stone handmade silver and gold pendants, rings, bangles and earrings, a large new stock of Blue John Jewellery, and a vast choice of colourful jewellery for spring. Christmas Trends so far!

So far this Christmas, apart from Lovelinks beads being our biggest seller, necklaces are proving our most popolar choice of present, followed closely by earrings. Possibly surprisingly, gold is showing early signs of being popular, and mainly yellow gold more than white gold.

Luxury gifts, for those very hard to buy for people, such as Silver lidded condiment jars, silver & gold toothpicks, bookmarks, paper knives and paper weights have been very popular, especially from our website www.parrissjewellers.co.uk

Watches, as always, have had a steady flow of sales across all price ranges and styles, including our CAT watch range for the active man.

The Magic Clock

A piece of History from Parriss Jewellers

The following article was published in The Sunday Mercury 14th April 1946.
The secret of a clock which has long mystified the people of Nuneaton has been revealed to me by Mr E.G.Parriss. The clock on display in his Abbey Street window seems to consist merely of two hands attached to the glass – there is no sign of any works.

Hundreds have stopped to look at the clock, and there has been considerable speculation as to its motive power. “Many people have called in to ask me how it works” Mr Parriss said. “One day a nurse came from the hospital to say that the clock had caused such an argument among the men on her ward that she felt it necessary to pacify them by obtaining the details.

Mr Parriss has improved on the one handed clock made by a prisoner of war taken at Copenhagen. This prisoner, John Schmidt, arranged a watch movement in one end of a hour hand so balanced that it would move the hand accurately through 360 degrees every 60 minutes. Mr Parriss, however, experimented with the principle and fixed the movement to the minute hand and geared an hour hand to it.

Mr Parriss has recently invented a free pendulum electric master clock, the impulse of which consists of 3-16th inch ball bearings, which roll down on a short track at a consistent speed on to the pendulum, make the electric contact and then return to the starting point.

This clock was shown at the British Industries Fair in 1948. He began work on this clock in 1944, when he set out to solve the problem which had baffled horologists for years – how to free a pendulum from any extraneous work. This he achieved and his clock forms a chapter in a book written by Mr F Hope – Jones, the greatest authority on electric clocks.

The Free pendulum master clock is now on display at the Science Museum, London.

E.G.Parriss was the son of the Founder of Parriss Jewellers and Grand Father to the current owner. How times have changed! If only I could find the time(and have the skill) to invent a clock.
